100-VDC to 110-VAC Converters?

02/09/2010 1:30 PM

Are there converters that will change 110volt DC to 110 volt AC and can you trickle charge a 110 volt DC battery system in 12 volt DC series from a 12 volt DC supply?

Re: AC to DC, not directly. When you change (invert) DC to AC, the RMS AC voltage is roughly 71% of the DC voltage. So if you want 110VAC, the DC voltage must be 110/.71 or 155VDC. If you only have 110VDC available, the highest AC you can get will be about 65VAC. You will need a transformer on the AC side that can step up the output. A 2:1 transformer ratio is fairly common, so you would easily be able to get 130VAC out of that, or tune your inverter to provide only 55VAC output then go through a 2:1 transformer.

This is extremely helpful.

As to the other question: can you trickle charge a 110VDC (or155VDC system) from a 12VDC supply, regardless of the output from the 155VDC system. I have talked to some battery folks and getting different answers.

Sorry, I forgot to address that.

Batteries store electrical energy by reversing the chemical process by which they create electrical energy. To do that, the voltage going into it must be higher than the voltage it would discharge if left alone. So only if your 110VDC batteries had discharged so much that they were below 12VDC output would a 12VDC charger do anything, and even then only until the battery voltage level came up to the output of the charger.

Now, as far as I know nobody makes a "110VDC battery". Batteries are a series of plates, i.e. lead-acid etc., and these plates create usually about 1.5V each. 6 of them in series creates 12VDC, that's the most common single battery voltage. Then we typically see multiple 12VDC batteries connected in series to get higher voltages. battery storage for a 110VDC system is probably 10 x 12V batteries in series for 120VDC max. If you trickle in only 110VDC, that's all they will hold.

If all you have is a 12V charger, you would need to be able to isolate each battery in the circuit to charge them individually.

It might be worth running your questions past this group. http://www.electro-tech-online.com/

There are a good deal of electronics and battery experts there. Or at least those who think that they are experts any way.

You will see me there as well.
