Windows 7 and Hotel Wireless Don't Mix

02/10/2010 6:30 AM

The clerk at the hotel in NYC told me that Windows 7 doesn't like wireless, and boy was he right. My service goes in and out, kicks me off, and stays connected but loses Internet access. I had the same problem with an airport wireless provider on the way here. And, when the wireless is working and I have access, sometimes it is slower than a Prius--like, it runs at phone modem speed, and takes forever to paint up a screen.

If I leave the laptop for a few minutes and the screen powers down, it loses the wireless connection, too.

I don't have this problem at home with my wireless network.

What's the secret setting for getting Windows 7 to work with a hotel wireless?

I have no idea, I'm still using XP. But here's a silly idea, contact Microsoft or your laptop assembler.

If this is an open network, the slowness may not be the OS you are using, but simply that everyone and their mother is using the wireless network, making it very slow.

I have experienced very slow modem speed internet in a hotel due to this reason myself, and I was not using Windows 7.

I don't know much about Windows 7, but you should be able to adjust your power settings to keep it from shutting down and disconnecting on you.

I've just bought a new laptop last month with Win 7, and I have had no issues with wireless access. My home network, networks at two different colleges, a hospital network, and several others have all worked with no issues.

I can't say right now why it's worked with no issues, but I will check the settings to see if I can forward some information.

Check the signal strength which you should be able to find in the lower RH side of your desktop. (taskbar)

My real guess is that frankd20 is right on with what he said.

I've been running Win 7 (prerelease versions) for about a year and have never had one wireless connection problem.

Hello,

We install and maintain a lot of hotel wireless here in "End-of-the-Earth", Oregon. Run the following test:

http://www.speedtest.net/

Pick one site within 100 miles and one over 1000 miles.

This the consistent test site for us as well as Charter and Qwest in this area.

If you are showing below 1M, then call the front desk and have them send up their Maintenance Department guru. Without a lot more info, I would suspect that your are smack in between two access points, distance wise.

Please keep in touch,

GLB

Thanks to those who responded.

I took the advice of changing my shutoff setting to "never shut off" so I haven't lost the signal because the laptop went to sleep.

It runs at speeds from incredibly slow to normal, and it still drops out from time to time. My biggest problem then is getting back on. I still don't know exactly what I do to get it restarted--but I disconnect, connect, look at settings and properties and mostly just piss around until something mysterious causes it to hook up again.

When I first reported my troubles to the hotel desk, the guy said they have a lot of trouble with Windows 7.

We're in NYC to see shows, not to screw around with a laptop and Windows 7, but I still have work to do between shows.

My personal thoughts are that the guy at the hotel is doing what they normally do; and that is to blame their poorly designed, inadequate equipment, ignorance back to you. Blaming it on Win 7 is just some idiot trying to shift the blame to something else for their problem.

You can show him my comments and I will somewhat apologise for calling him an idiot but it really irks me they can't be honest and tell the truth. Their equipment is either inadequate or junk.

Precisely! (except I'm not supposed to say these things out loud). Customer service went out with "Ward and June". In all fairness, I HAVE met one F/D lady who really tried to understand the mechanics...

My speed test suggestion was to enable Mr. Poop to have AMMUNITION in his further conversations.

He works the 4-midnight shift at the hotel. When I reported the problem, he said the wireless system wasn't reading the laptop's IP address (I could get on the wireless network but couldn't get Internet access). He entered a whole new IP address and fiddled with my settings to get it to log on. He seems to know what he's doiing--he got me on the air, anyway.

I agree that most hotel people say, "It's not my job" and refer you to a help desk in India, but this guy went above and beyond.

It's been two days now, and it works OK most of the time--especially since the laptop doesn't go to sleep any more and lose the connection. Let's hope if it goes out again that it's on the 4-12 shift.

Saw two Broadway shows today:

A Little Night Music (Angela Lansbury can still carry a show)

South Pacific (what a VOICE!)

4 shows to go before leaving Sunday and returning to my home wireless.

I stayed in the Holiday Inn down near Central Park and the connection was flawless with Windows 7 and my wifes XP machine (she likes it). Two weeks later I was at Quality Inn by Macys and niether computer worked worth a damn. So I went walking till I found one of the many WiFi resturaunts and the computer was back to burning premium gas again. I just saw Carmen but in a theater in West Palm Beach, FL,. It was filmed in NYC at the Met. It is warm and sunny down in WPB and Wifi works well damn near everywhere.

I haven't "upgraded" to Win7 on any of my systems but I have not heard of problems with wireless. I suspect that the local LAN is causing the problems. Lack of bandwidth, electromagnetically noisy environment, etc. If the ISP is hopping IP addys then the wireless router could be loosing it's connection too.

For once I won't blame Microsoft....
