Audio Tape Recovery

01/29/2007 5:32 AM

I have an old audio cassette with a recording that I need to recover but it is very noisy and I cannot hear all sections of the tape.

I need a variable filter of some sort, maybe a PC running a FFT. Any suggestions of cheap software that might be available? I can manage the hardware.

I run some software called AudioMagic that I have played all my old vinyl into (& tapes) and now have on mp3. You can then save thru any number of filters. The trouble is, I cant remember where I got the program from!

There are some clever people within the BBC technical team who may be able to help...

BOB-go to a good search engine(GOOGLE) punch in "denoiser". They make software that you can download that will help with your noisy problem.

I have found this software to be very good at cleaning up recordings transferred to my PC from cassettes and LPs. The problems I have had are good quality recordable CDs to transfer my cleaned up recordings to. I have had some CDs 'go bad' and had to reburn them after a couple of years.

I bought Cyntrilium's CoolEditPro. Nearly everything (audio) is possible with this program. But it might be a little "over the top" to buy it for digitizing just 1 tape. For denoising I use this technique : Feed the program with a part of your tape where there's only noise. (the longer part, the better) Then the program will use this part as a sample to reduce the noise from the parts where there is audio information. Really : it's amazing ! After the noise reduction, you can apply a series of filters, compressors etc. to make your audio sounding even better.

Bob

I will add my endorsement to 44m's advice concerning CoolEditPro. It is a very effective and readily available piece of software. It will do what you need to do. Many radio stations use it, so it may be locally available to you in that way also.

With endless number of audio DirectX and ActiveX Plug-Ins for Audio Editors, I found this one very efficient for cleaning hiss, pops, scratches, and crackles:

As suggested by others there are plenty of tools.

I have used the BIAS SoundSoap 2.0 and found very good results.

You can contact BIAS at this address:

Berkley Integrated Audio Software, Inc.
1370 Industrial Avenue, Suite A
Petaluma, CA 94952
+1-707-782-1866

http://www.bias-inc.com/

This tool is almost like free and still makes a big difference in the audio quality. It has many audio correction filters which are very useful. Another important feature is that it can be plugged in any VSTi Audio Software and apply filtering ONLINE (while recording or playback).

Hope this helps!

Cheers!
