pneumatic cylinder use

hi, i am working in a factory as designer for jigs, fixtures, gauges and small automations. i am in tension from many days for how to use pneumatic cylinder for an object to hold it. if any formulaes are available so, please give me.

Will you use the cylinder to hold an object in place, by extending the piston?

There are two ports on most cylinders. Apply air to one port, the piston deploys. Apply air to the other port, piston retracts.

This is so straight forward that I can't think of anything else to add. It's up to you to design the part nest/holder.

I'm not aware of any formulas for this.

The pressure being added to the cylinder ports, and the formula for the area of a circle should be all you need. As stated by other posters, the function of a pneumatic cylinder is elementary.
