Gas tube power supply specs

02/13/2010 3:28 PM

on this site: http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/item/HVS-1/GAS-TUBE-SIGN-POWER-SUPPLY/-/1.html I have found specs for a power supply.

It sounds like this:" Specifications: Input: 12 Vdc @ 1 Amp (Suggested power source CAT# DCTX-1215). Output: 2,000 Vac @ 10 mA. Open circuit voltage: 3,000 Vac 30Khz. Short circuit current: 15 mA. UL."

If calculated, the input power is 12 VA and the output is 20 VA. How come? Do I miss something? some power factor correction for the output, so it is less than the input?

You are correct, a power supply cannot provide more power than what enters. So either this information contains a typographical error, or you've discovered a case of "specmanship." I suspect the latter.

At the same time, to get a gas tube to glow does not require a pristine, well regulated supply. So this will still do its job.
