HP dx2000MT Intel 865GV MB CPU Overheat

02/15/2010 7:15 AM

Hello all,

I have this newly acquired problem whereby my PC,from a cold start, for some reason displays "Missing operating system" runs with this text screen for about 1 min then shuts down.

On power up DVD and HD LED's light up as if it wants to boot but only the above mentioned happens. I can go into the bios settings and under hardware management I can see the temperature of the CPU rising rapidly to the shut-off temperature indicated. CPU has heatsink(original), fan is working and speeds up before shutdown.I have physically touched the heatsink and verified this. PSU voltages are good and stable. Cannot boot of bootable cd as insufficient time before shut down. I have removed heatsink and CPU, reset it in its socket and replaced the HS still to no joy. I have also re slotted and changed the memory. The machine is stand alone, no internet or foreign software added and no network either. This is a sudden unexplained death.

I'm ready to toss it into the trash (MB that is)albeit wise words from the CR4 jury.

Machine:HP dx2000MT, Intel 865GV MB, 2 Gig ram, P4 Intel CPU, 450w PSU (new), on board graphics and sound. No extras

Thanks in advance for any comments

Not much to offer...disconnect power cable from computer and take out battery and leave for ten minutes. Replace battery and turn on.

Also try another PSU....you mention yours is new...would not hurt to try with another one capable of handling ~500 watts.

Try that and see what happens. Try using a another heat sink (bigger) with new thermal grease that is capable of handling your CPU...or just replace the thermal grease if you can't get another heat sink.

...try another hard drive too

Main issue is heating, stating the obvious...so try increasing heat setting before shut down in Bios to about 80C if that option is available.

...like I said, not much to offer but basic troubleshooting.

no os means computer cannot find windows or whatever system you have.

the hard drive may be corrupt or not working. or o/s is not there

the computer has a basic o/s which comes on when computer is turned on the system then looks for the installed operating system O/S if it cant find it you get the error message unable to find operating system

WHAT OPERATING SYSTEM WAS YOU USING?

No i cannot, shuts down to quickly. It's as if it goes into thermal runaway. I use linux as the opp sys and has being working fine for about a year now. I'm going to swop out the MB and go through trial and error just for curiosity. Are cpu's prone to sudden death?

Anyway, wont harp on about it, its old and time for an upgrade
