Communication in metering

02/14/2010 6:54 AM

I want my energy meter to communicate a distant (around 50 meter) master (PC) with the help of an isolated RS-485 MODBUS systems. For this i have used H11L1 opto-coupler for receive & transmit lines at meter ends.

The system work perfectly OK but this optocoupler is costly. So can i use 4N35 in place of this opto. I have to communicate at a baud rate of 9600.

Plz confirm. Thnx

For the 9600 baud the 4N35 could work provided that you have the right driving circuit (there are different currents for the LED) and if 4N35 has enough current compliance for the next stage. The max ON and OFF times are some 10usec, each.

thnx, but in this case what should be the driving circuitry. do u mean to say that more current is required to flow through the opto LEDs.

As I recall, some LED's can be driven by 5mA, most by10mA, or even 20mA. You have to see what drives the LED and, also, what the output transistor or Schmitt trigger load is.
