Noise Standard

02/16/2010 7:26 AM

Maximum noise levels at any location

an employee can reasonably be expected to occupy while

carrying out normal process or mechanical work functions shall not exceed 115 dBA at any time. Is this a "reasonably" noise level for a welding shop? Wich one is the noise standard in Europe?

Any noise above 80 dBA can be damaging depending on the level and time duration subjected to it. At 115 dBA you are approaching the noise level of jet engine. Sounds a bit much for welding shop. Ground crews at the airport I've worked at wear plugs and muffs in combination to protect their hearing from that level of noise.

OSHA says 85dB over 8 hours is the max "safe" level, if I recall correctly.
