Sonar High Frequency Piezoelectric Device

02/17/2010 8:21 AM

Hi every one!

I just suscribe to this forum because I have some questions about a project I have to do with my school. I have to think about and make a SONAR high frequency [20kHz - 150 kHz], with a bandwith [10 - 20kHz]. Well I'm a little lost, first of all i have to think about the equivalent circuit of the sonar, can someone help me plz ? If you know some document, webpage...

Thanks you

A simple square wave oscillator made using a 555 timer IC or CMOS logic gates will probably do the trick.(Fairly simple as a start project in electronics)

You will need an output stage to provide enough power to drive the tranducer, this may be tricky unless you have some electronics experience.

Google 555 time circuit or cmos oscillator should help.

Thanks you for your answer !

Do you know where I can find information about equivalent circuit with formula for an acoustic sonar ?

I have to work with that at this time in order to know the output current in function of the input voltage, thanks for helping me !

sorry youve lost me there what do you mean by acoustic?

reason sonar is by its nature Acoustic.

Do you mean sonar that works out of water?

Google peizo transducer equivalent circuit, or go to a peizo manufacturers website.
From what I remember they are a fairly capacitive load, high DC resistance.
I googled it and found the link shown in a minute or two...

and i think this concludes all the info i can find given the limited time i have.

the last link is the result of google search for you to look at.

i cannot advise further as i have no expeiance of sonar other than knowing what it is.

let me know how you get on, good luck

JibbsISEN,

Thank you for:
1) Registering
2) Telling us you are working on a school project
3) Showing us that you have done some work before asking for help

This makes you stand out from the other people in your class who are all named "Guest" and don't seem to want to do any of their own work. What you learn in school is almost less important than going through the process of learning to learn.

Your question about "output current" doesn't make sense. I suspect that you either mean "input current" or "output power". For both of them you need to use the data sheets from one or more parts. Del's link does a good job of giving you the general characteristics. If you want specific data then you need to go to a specific data sheet.

Note that most data sheets are written by marketing people who often use engineering data when it helps them sell the product. There will be many times when you will not be able to get the data you want without hooking up a part and running your own tests. Welcome to the real world.

One might also look at the sonar range finder for the Kodak One-Step that was out as a kit for experimenters a few years ago
