Effect of Harmonics

01/30/2007 7:33 AM

If anybody can help please I'd like to know the effect of harmonics in power system on electrical induction motors especially concerning the rotor vibration.

Also I'd like to know the total harmonic distortion limits according to IEC or IEEE standard.

Thanks a lot.

Harmonics particularly 3rd and 7th cause overheating of the motors. As regards its effect on rotor vibration on large machines its negligible but in small machines it can accelerate the wear out and damage to bearings.Harmonic torques arising out of interaction of the fluxes due to harmonic currents interact to produce parasitic forces leading to vibrations.
