Unruly Behavior and Intolerable Comments

02/23/2010 11:12 AM

I am shocked to see the unruly behaviour and intollerable comments by educated people on your web site - especially from US. Is it arrogance? Thier contribution is little, but keep passing dirty remarks. Is it possible to have a limited number of invited people to brain storm - instead of keeping the form open to rowdies or street smart? See one of your own great quotes

"Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great." -- Mark Twain

Hi MS Divekar,

Moderating this site is an overwhelming chore. We cover the site as best we can with a small team of part-time moderators. We could certainly use your help. When you come across a post that you believe is intolerable and unruly, simply click the "Report!" button within the comment and we'll look into it.

I strongly agree with your comments up to the point where you stated "especially US" (typical bash USA attitude). Do you ever give praise to the numerous excellent comments coming from Americans. I was not born or raised in America, and I know that a good survey of the poor (arrogant) replies on this site would show (read several from Russia and England) that many also come from other countries too. Most professionals I have met in the USA, do not put people down and are usually very willing to help.

Some posts from India and other countries (no disrespect ~ language barrier understood) are poorly written and lack details. This has a tendancy (but not an excuse) to bring out the worst in some people. You appear to be correct that those who make arrogant and disrespectful comments typically contribute little to this site.

I was born and raised in Northampton, England ~ always my home, but educated well in the beautiful USA.

By the same token non-Indian people here might complain that Indian members always try to get other people to do their homework/schoolwork/workwork for them, based on the behavior of some who have done so in the past. Are their complaints justified, or are the few bad apples simply getting the lion's share of attention in this regard? Do you feel this to be a fair characterization of CR4's Indian members? I don't.

Nor do I find yours.

On 19 Feb 2010, someone asked if our Internal Combustion motors are indeed only 1% efficient. This is a very simple question, clearly formulated. Even a freshly graduated, (inexperienced) diplomaed Engineer or Technician will answer this with ease in about 4-5 lines. There is only one approach to this. Well, there were about 180 replies. Have you read them? Very interesting and very ILLUMINATING. How many educated replies have you seen there, Mr. Divekar?

Hello M S DIVEKAR,

References, please. Locate the thread(s) and if you don't know how to do it already, copy the address, click on the , and paste the link. Do this as many times as needed to support your position.

I do not know if your accusation has merit, but I admire your loyalty to your country. I believe we would all do well to adopt such an attitude.

Mike

You must be new to Internet forums. This place is FAR more civil than most. Take a browse of www.4chan.org sometime...

When posting to internet forums such as this (and this is one of the better-mannered forums about), there are a few key things to take on board that help avoid you getting your knickers in a knot :

1) Cultivate a thick skin. If you can't do this, you will suffer every time someone disagrees with you.

2) Don't act like an a**hole when you are obviously wrong. Be prepared to admit your errors, and move on.

3) Don't feed trolls. Some folks make sport out of inflaming others and watching the fallout, and if you respond to them you are playing right into their hands.

4) If you are going to make a post that disagrees with someone else, stick to the facts, and leave out anything inflammatory.

5) Respect all other posters, even those that probably don't really deserve it. Especially, make sure that you don't savage those posters who have solid posting histories and reputations on the board, as this just makes you look like a plonker.

I am sure that others will wish to add to the above, but it's a start.

You could always start your own forum. Then you could establish your own civility rules. And you could even exclude people from US. This would assure that you have only courteous, well mannered members. It would also remove a good amount of the worlds intelligence from your well mannered forum.

You might also put in filters to keep things such as this out,

"hi myself iam a engineer in electrical just passed out if u have any information plz tell me frm india"

Cheers.
