SF-6 interrupters on Vista switchgear

01/31/2007 10:49 AM

As I read on documents I am impressed with the S&C 'Vista' switchgear features. However one of the competitor rep did mention that some of the customers using the Vista product have some problems and they are changing the Vistas to the PMEs.

Just I want to know from the users out there some response whether positive or negative on the Vista swichgear. Your comment will help us to determine which product we select.

Thank you,

I don't understand your question. PMH is simply live front access connections and PME is safe front bushing type connections. S&C does both. Was the customer changing from the PMH to the PME versions in the Vista range?

We have had a similar situation here with the reps from another major switchgear company talking rubbish (talking down about the switchgear with some pretty weak arguments) because they were unable to come up with a good reason why the customer should use their gear over S&C's gear. In the end we had to walk away trying to keep a straight face (if I had stayed any longer I may have burst out laughing). If the rep cannot give a good reason why his gear is better than S&C's using positive points (rather than trying to talk S&C's gear down), or saying that other customers have switched between S&C PMH to S&C PME (most likely due to user operational issues with live exposed connections than an actual design flaw or fault with the S&C PMH line of switchgear) then stick with S&C's gear.

I am not a salesman. I am the design engineer, and I have designed solutions around, and we have sold PME Vistas for years and we and our customers are more than happy with them.

We would strongly recommend S&C Vista PME for 33kV applications.

as I did mention above the Vista is with SF-6 interrupter, the other PME (like PME-6,9, etc.) are PME pad mounted gear with fuses. I think the problem might happen to be with SF-6 leakage or if you want to take out of service a leaking SF-6 product how you handle the product and how you waste manage the SF-6 material etc.

15kv line application

do you have any thought

Thanks,

Although SF-6 is a fairly harmful gas (generally to the ozone layer), I have not come across any problems with leakage from the Vista tanks. The switchgear is not designed to be refilled (at least without very specialised equipment). The tanks are designed not to leak. The same argument could be used for vacuum based switch gear (you don't get leaks, so you don't have to "replace" the vacuum) (Ignoring the cheap, poor quality equipment). Are you sure about the SF-6 being the issue?

In your 15kV application, S&C gear is fine, however if space (and to a smaller extent, cost) were an issue, perhaps quality vacuum interrupter switchgear (such as Holec's Innovac range from Eaton) may also be suitable.
