03/02/2010 1:00 AM

Dear Sir

Pl.advise me for the following issue.

We have one filter design as per ASME Section VIII Div-1 FOR the operation pressure for 17 bar at operating temp-30 Degree C.It is of Candle type. During removal of candle one of it got break inside and not to remove it we have option to cut it from the middle of length. It is made of SA240 Type-304L. Pl. advise it will be advisable or not ? Is there any standard referance for that repair ?

Please clarify your request. You state "... filter design...". Is this a high pressure filter for filtering water or gas? You also state "... Candle type." But "candle" filters are normally rigid ceramic. You state "... made of SA240 Type-304L". Is this a sintered metal filter? How did this 304LSS filter "break inside"? If you have access to cut the filter in half and seal it why do you not have access to replace the filter in total? If the filter is welded inside the housing and not removable, then modification of the "filter" is possible, but will affect its filtering capability and pressure loss across the filter, possibly to the detriment of the process. ASME Procedures should not be required as long as this "filter" is wholly inside the housing and subject to only the pressure loss across the "filter candle". However, if the "filter" is an integral part of the housing and sees the pressure loss of 17 bar, then ASME procedures for field modification should be followed. More information would be required to assist further.

hi!

as rightly said by YesMAM there is a need for more data and constructional features of the filter. kindly furnish the following data :

1) type of the filter design: (flanged body etc.)

2) type of filter candle elements (along with make if possible):(sintered metal, sintered metal pleated etc.)

3) end connection of the filter elements with the element holding plate.

enjoy!
