Dry Switching and Gold-Plated Contacts

03/02/2010 8:42 AM

Minimum switching load:

The minimum values of power, voltage and

current that a contact can reliably switch..

İt writes in a finder catalogue, so why is there a limit for switching? for example i have a 12 V 10 mA relay so why should i have a limit such as 12 volt 1 mA?

what if i need to switch a very little current?

Also i couldnt get the dry switching - gold relation, why need to have more higher quality material need to be used when the subject is dry switching?

Well, if I understand your questions correctly, the answers seem to be in your link:

"Mercury-wetted relay contacts are prety much immune to wear."

and, the entire paragraph that starts out

"Gold: Contacts containing a high percentage of gold are excellent for use in low energy or dry circuits switching where low, stable contact-resistance is essential because of gold's very high resistance to surface film formation..."

We seldom see someone post an answer to their own question. Is there something I am missing? Your link seems to be pretty good information about relay contact selection.

???
