Boiler Feedwater - Acceptable TDS

03/02/2010 3:56 PM

On this platform, I have a Scotch 3 pass wet back boiler, Mod: Series 400. It is used for generating steam for cleaning and heating applications. I have read through the manufacturer's nomenclature and can find nothing about the quantities of total dissolved solids (tds) that is acceptable in the feedwater. I have found total suspended solid.

The package has a mechanical water softener. Upstream of the softener, the tds is .15 mg/liter (hardness) and .03 mg/liter (hardness) downstream. Is tds of .15 mg/liter (hardness) acceptable? If not, is .03 mg/liter acceptable?

Correction: The technician reported the results with error. The actual readings are 15 mg and 3 mg. Please forgive the confusion.

The American Boiler Manufacturers Association recommends Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) by operating pressure in parts per million (PPM). This link to the Engineering Tool Box has a table listing several water chemistry parameters for boiler feedwater.

*Acceptability is some thing connected to the consumer.

*As a practically workable standard, your feed water data should be acceptable.

*Lessons teach end user about do's and do not's and you got to be better informed user than the manufacturer.

Contact the manufacturer and discuss it directly.

A key parameter is either the blowdown TDS, or the concentration ratio. Given the feed TDS and one of these, the other may be determined

Boiler water treatment is a matter of finding an acceptable economic balance between the rate of deterioration of the boiler and the cost of supply of the water and its treatment. There are far too many solutions to be discussed on CR4!
