Window Combo Heat Pump/AC

03/04/2010 6:51 AM

Hello, Anyone have any experience with combination heat pump AC units that can be mounted in a window opening? I am looking at the different ones online and would like to know if some units are better than others. Some have heat strips. I am looking at the true heat pump.

I use a heat pump that can can go down to 18C and up to 32C or so room temperature. It comes in two units as inside mounting and outside collector of heat. Try worcester-bosch.co.uk website for air to air heat pump.

Are you open to a little different option? If so checkout the Mitsubishi Mr Slim Units, they are very worthy of their cost and I have used them for years and they pay off well. They are green friendly and work in all most any situation.

The Mr. Slim Units are good, But require a Refrigerant lineset and boring holes for the lineset and electrical. "Not plug and play". Try the Amana or Goodman PTC series @ www.goodmanmfg.com. They will not fit a standard window opening. These are commonly seen and used in the hotel/motel industry. They have a five year warranty and do come in a true heat pump. Most heat pumps will have some sort of electric heat to heat the space while in defrost mode. You want the "aux heat", during defrost in your climate.

Heat strips work just like your toaster or oven, They will demand much more energy to run than a heat pump. However if the area to be heated is smallish or up to a marginally medium sized room, maybe 500 to 600 sq. ft. and the warmth is desired for long periods of time rather than just an hour or so per day, a heat pump can work satisfactorily. The use of a heat pump requires the user to comprehend that the heat is produced slowly. Quick changes in temperature simply do not happen. This is why many heat pump AC appliances also contain a heat strip. The most efficient way to use a heat pump for heating room air space, is to set the thermostat at a desired temperature and leave the thing alone. You will save a lot of money and frustration by not chasing the thermostat up and down trying to reach and hold a room at a desirable comfortable level. If not then a heat pump can actually be more troublesome than it is worth, is more expensive to buy and operate. I live in a 2500 sq.ft house. It is heated through the winter with a heat pump.
