Caterpillar Engine 3512B - Shutoff

03/04/2010 11:43 PM

hi all

would some one of you guys help me to solve this problem, if you have any idea?

i have problem with caterpillar engine model#3512B electronic injector, it is driving ac generator.the problem is that the engine is shuting down after period of time, some times run for 3 hours and some times for about 5 hours no problem then it shut down, it start and run fine if i restart it. i checked if there is any fault codes with lap top, it shows event codes: E225-3 which mean engine overcrank, E2087-3 which mean air intake shutoff closed, E038-1 which mean low engine coolant temprature warning. the first two codes are shutdown and the third one is just warning as engine water temprature somtimes is low because there is no much load on the generator.

as per the manual says the recent fault happened, the first one will be showing on the laptop, the code E225 happened first and caused the engine to shutoff, then maybe the module close the air flaps and for sure will get the code E2087. what i dont understand is why the engine is shuting down because of overcrank while it was running. overcrank problem will happen only if the module is starting the engine, for sure it will not crank if the engine is running.

when ever we start the engine, we close the air valve which supplying the starter.

sorry for this long story but my questions are:

is there some problem with the module? or the engine shuts down because of another reason then it is trying to restart but because the starter air valve is closed, it will not start and detect overcranking?

many thanks

You did not spec your gen set how ever you did say that the reason it runs cool is that it is running with no load. Is it possible that it is sensing no load and shutting down for that reason? And then showing the over crank error code as it tries to restart but can't because the air valve is closed?

it shows code 038-1, which mean the engine water temprature is low, 038-3 mean shutdown, but i got E038-1 which mean only warning and will not couse the engine to shutoff, so this code is not the reason to shutoff the engine. the other two codes are E2087-3 and E225-3, as i said ''-3'' means shutdown code, so one of these two codes caused the engine to shutoff.

this engine is 1500 rpm and big radiator which make it very good cooling action, thats why when the electric load is low on the generator side, it will be not heavy load on the engine and cause the engine temprature going down.

I would have to assume that you have a ground wire too close to a heat source and sometimes that'll make the wire quit conducting electric causing the vehicle to die without any mechanical reason as to why. I am a house wife with an elCamino that would just die after a couple hours of normal operation. I re routed the starting system wires away from my headers and I never suffered from that dilema again. Just a suggestion LOL

It looks like the problem is with the Gauge cluster panel. Closing the air line for starter is always safe. The warning shouldn't come when it is running more than 3 or 5 hrs. The over crancking command is comming from cluster panel and it seems to be maul functioning. If you have dealer contact, u can ask them to solve it.
