Materials Compatible with Methyl Amines

03/09/2010 3:42 AM

We have heat exchangers in our methyl amines plants. MOC of shell and tube is F22/P22 respectively. Approximate Composition of fluid at out let is

Ammonia - 25%

Mono Methyl Amine - 13%

Di-Methyl Amine - 20%

Tri-Methyl Amine - 30%

Methanol - 1-2%

Water - 20%

We are facing problem of frequnt leakages in tubes as well as shell. Can anybody suggest any alternate ( better ) compatible material?

These sound like maxima; they total 109-110%, so I suppose one or more are sometimes less.

Is this fluid in the shell or in the tubes? What is the other fluid in the tubes or shell?

F22 and P22 are unfamiliar to me; are there more common names for these metals/alloys?

There is lots of easily accessed info on the web and in catalogs for corrosion resistance of various materials to various chemicals. Most of this addresses individual chemicals rather than combinations, but a good start would be to find a material that is resistant to each/all of these chemicals individually. Ammonia is in there, so forget about most copper alloys. Stainless, Hastelloy, and even aluminum might be candidates, but I haven't looked yet.

Is there a way that some other issue like electrolysis might be involved?

Just a few ideas to start with....

Have a look at the WWW.Capcis.com web site as they specialise in material selection for corrosive substances etc.
