Elbow-Style Hinge Joint for Micro Struts

03/09/2010 4:57 PM

I want to design an elbow style hinge joint connecting two micro struts together. The end of one strut is connected to the middle of the second strut (T style joint). I want a large angle of movement and would like the two struts to lie substantially parallel at one end of the angle of movement. Both struts are 0.05mm thick and the total hinge thickness must be less than 0.06mm thick. Both struts need to be roughly 0.05-0.07mm wide. The material is Nitinol and the application is micro surgery.

Any thoughts on the joint design or companies that specialise in this type of work would be appreciated.

Thanks,

EB

Hello there EB.

To be certain we are all talking about the same thing...

This micro-strut assembly (sub-assy?): Is it for inclusion inside human (or animal) tissue? Or is this some tool, appliance, brace...?

To be certain of dim's: 0.05mm thick, and 0.05mm wide... so a square solid? And, to convert to my customary dimensions, about 1/64th in2?

This motion... parallel to perpendicular? Or, overtravel? How far? Is motion allowed or desired in other than one plane? Is there rotation of either strut within this joint, with respect to the other strut?

Special little mechanism you are asking about here... pretty sure proprietary information will be approached. We shall see...

In addition, I see you are posting a few questions around. Why not become a member?

It is for use in humans although it is not an implant.

0.05mm is 0.002" or 1/512 inch.

The motion of the first strut is parallel to the second strut. Preferably there is no perpendicular motion (elbow joint...not shoulder joint).

OOPS! I thought I slipped a decimal. Thanks for confirming size.

Offhand, I think a separate hinge may be difficult. Is it objectionable that the strut intersected be machined with a sort of slot, and the intersecting strut be machined with a sort of 'tongue', offset with a 'J' shape to allow the parallel? This, still, will be a difficult machine process, but should be able to be manufactured.

Hi Doorman,

What does being a member involve?

Hello there, Eamon B.

Well... it really does not involve much at all. It does allow the members to be more certain that comments or questions are being generated by the original poster (OP), instead of another anonymous guest. It does get confusing in a busy thread, sorting out all the guests, which 'Guest' is really responding with information that will be useful.
