Animal Trial Lab/Model

03/09/2010 5:05 PM

Does anyone know of an animal trial lab that has developed a good model of acute ischemic stroke?

Just did a quick search of "acute ischemic stroke rat" at PubMed, and it seems that middle cerebral artery occlusion MCAO is a standard method of induction: for example:http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20138164

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20100543

There are other methods as well, you'll find them by reading more of the 450 or so entries to that search.

I should have been clearer in my original question. I am looking for a large animal model. It is for the evaluation of a device rather than a drug.

Eamon,

Here's an overview of the models: you can see for yourself which ones are applicable to a large animal. Drug or device evaluation would not make a difference to the model for inducing a stroke, afaict from a glance these established models are all physical methods related to the obstruction of blood flow.

Hi Artsmith,

This is a nice review, I hadnt thought of looking on Wiki. There is one good paper referenced in the review from my perspective. You are correct that it makes no difference whether it is a large or small animal for inducing the stroke. However, testing a device on a small animal is of little value.

Thanks,

Eamonb

I expect you'll be wanting to watch for the results of this human trial.
