I always enjoyed it from a CB or HAM radio setup. To use satellite, you would need a very short wave and directional antenna as you probably know.

Come the apocalypse, those who remember ham radio and dry-cell battery technology will be among the few who are able to communicate over long distances. I applaud those who wish to keep this knowledge alive. I have always wanted to build a HAM from scratch. If you know of the availability of any plans please drop me a msg at yerfnad@hotmail.com. Thanx.

Just Google ARRL (American Radio Relay League) They have literaly tons of information, plans, schematics etc. One caution you need a licence from the FCC or the regulating body in your country.
