Honda Engine - Overiding the Transponder Signal

03/11/2010 12:42 AM

Dear Gurus,

Having installed a "donor" Honda engine - Transalp 650 - into a buggy chassis, an electrical problem has been encountered with the HISS theft protection system. The ignition key enters a transponder sytem sending a signal to the CDI activating it.

My problem is the engine was purchased from a wrecker in Australia and the key was snapped off in the lock. (Insurance house policy) The key has a matched signal to a transponder that doesn't want to be fooled. Honda Australia can't help unless I fly a technician here. Does anyone in CR4 know how to bypass the 3 sensor signal wires to the CDI? Please advise so we can test run the engine, and start the performance enhancement processes.

In the US some lock smiths can make new keys and code them. Maybe they can remove the old key otherwise a new ignition switch is required.

Various companies make kits for out of vehicle starting.

I assume you don't want the enhanced security

What year Transalp?

so a schematic can be found

I would try to figure out the nature of the signal, going to the CDI & try to simulate/replace it

The engine has been transplanted in a sand buggy after the motorbike it was in was absolutely destroyed in a crash. The security issue is not a concern, it's starting the engine and getting all the other systems operating.

It's a 2005 Transalp, and we have a wiring schematic, the CDI is proprietry sensitive so no drawing will be given for that printed board - or we could go in and bypass it all.

Your third statement is exactly what has to be done and that is why I'm calling on the combined knowledge and skills of the CR4 gurus for help.

Any chance you could do a scan of the wiring diagram & post it?

probably nothing too tricky to bypass, simple connection, to ground or to hot come to mind...

but I certainly understand the reluctance to fry the CDI box

If the key has a chip you can measure the resistance and buy a proper resister.

isn't the transponder in the fob?

which the OP doesn't have...

The cheapest thing is to contact the original owner for a spare key. Pull out the broken part pay mailing fees.

If you can get the registration number the dealer can make a new key.

Do a google search but its going to be next to impossible to accomplish what you want to do without detailed wiring diagrams.

Impossible is a word I have no faith in, "next to impossible" - yes maybe you're right. The maths of the economy says it is cheaper to get a new CDI - without the HISS system and wire it straight in.

The 3 wires that concern this are:- the power from the CDI going to the switch,(pale yellow with a pink tracer), an earth wire back to the main harness (dark green), and obviously a pulse/signal wire going to pin 7 in the CDI (mauve with pink tracer).

Contacting the original owner, contacting the wrecking company where it was purchased, contacting Honda Australia - both the Technical Service Department and Engineering, buying the complete manual (to obtain the wiring diagram), contacting the masters of knowledge, not much left to do except reevaluate the problem.

Plan "B", get a new CDI "sans transponder excitation circuit" is our best option now.

I found a bit about reprogramming, but you would still need a transponder key:here

the 2nd best option may be a after market ECU,, which would probably allow some tuning with a laptop

here's a excerpt of the post

Re: HISS Key replacement

Thanks for that John

The Inspection Adaptor (Cable) - Part Number 07XMZ-MBW0100 costs £82.04 + VAT = £96.40 and consists of a lead that connects to the battery via croc clips. "Your havin' a larf" doesn't even come near!!!
This lead has diode protection and the other end plugs into the Sumoto 2-pin plug on the bike (Honda technical QUOTE: "Where one of the two pins is 5 volt +ve"). Therefore the battery voltage has been reduced to 5 volts.
If we are talking of two wires and one is 5 volts positive with respect to something, then it has to be the other pin which will be chassis or 0 volts?
This sounds fairly easy to make using a 7805 chip and a 1N4004 diode plus a couple of resistors or so plus to croc-clips for the battery end. It might even require a heat-sink. Honda Technical were fairly relaxed about telling me the procedure and even went as far as saying that putting a switch in the lead from the battery makes programming easier as the battery voltage has to be turned off momentarily when the HISS light is in its 'Receptive' mode [i.e. flashing]. Total cost of kit shold cost less than a fiver.
The switch saves having to unplug the +ve Sumoto lucar connector on the bike wiring harness.
Anybody got any further thoughts on this one, I am trying to save some money and hopefully develop the skills regarding this problem for future HISS key losers.
Has anyone got the definitive procedure for re-programming a HISS key as I was trying to write down the test procedure as Honda Technical told me what to do.

Well Garth, I personally thank you for your persistance. A key I can get, the rest after following the link you provided from the lads in England - I know that bit can be duplicated to get this beast running.

Again thanks for your help. I truly appreciate it, as will the owner of the buggy .....

Well Garth,

Last night we were playing in the shed with the beast, we have had a win. I thank all those who helped me with this for your time and research.

Thank you.
