Upstream Length Requirement for Static Mixers

03/11/2010 1:59 AM

We are planning to locate the static mixer on the hor. equipment operating platform as per the process requirement. To complete the pipe routing, i just wanted to know, whetther upstream staraight length requirment is applicable to the static mixer or not?

Not to the mixer itself, though the straight length downstream of the mixer would be critical to other things in the pipeline. As the static mixer is a high-turbulence fitting, err on the side of caution and increase the normal upstream straight pipe length to the downstream device by a factor of 1.5 to 2.

Hi Neetaj,

The static mixer's efficiency depend first on the viscosities of the ingredients, their number, and the rate of flow through the mixer.

For example, to make paint, we feed the following ingredients in equal time for each liquid. Flow rate: 10 gallons of one ingredient in 10 minutes, and 22 gallons in 10 minutes of another ingredient.

TiO2, Delaminated Clay, and Minex in pre-dispersed form, blended Emulsions and mixed Additives. Each product flows different rate because of volume differences. We established that for all of our paints, without changing the number of heads for each, two (2) passes in two (2) static mixers with 11 heads each in line give us satisfaction.

Build up a data with different ingredients in use at your place, at different flow rate and the number of passes in one (1) head (static mixer unit), and multiple of it.

Good luck, Gil.
