What Does LFTR Mean?

03/11/2010 8:53 AM

After 40 years away from the nuclear reactor field, I'm trying to get up-to-speed so I can properly reply to a condensation of Alisa Gravitz's article "Ten Strikes Against Nuclear Power" which was in a local newspaper. The things I have been reading use lots of acronyms. What does "LFTR" stand for? I suspect "Liquid Fuel Thorium Reactor" but want verification.

Thanks.

Liquid fluoride thorium reactor. See the molten salt reactor section in Wiki.

Is this the article you're referring to?

I haven't checked the blog yet. The article has the same title, but the text is different--similar, but not identical; mine is a bit longer. At the bottom it says "Adapted from a speech . . ." so it appears to be a condensation.

I considered LF = Liquid Fluorine, but isn't fluorine a gas? So I considered that unlikely.

Thanks for the reply.

Flouride (not flourine) - mixture of a few including the basic radioactive source's flouride (eh ThF in this case)

Hi, Lehman.

Molecular fluorine (F2, two F atoms bonded to each other) is a gas at room temperature and pressure. Chill it enough or compress it enough (or both), and you can get fluorine ice.

That applies to pretty much everything, until recently including helium. I think I read that helium ice has been created in a lab somewhere by freezing it to very near absolute zero and compressing it? Not sure ... but everything else can be liquefied and frozen.

OK, off topic, but still ...

Cheers! DZ

Checked the blog--I didn't care for it, but the article in Mechanical Engineering looks interesting. I'll read it more thoroughly later.

I think you're right about the acronym, Lehman57. My source is an article from The Oil Drum that you might enjoy, considering your interest in the subject.
