Synchronization of Induction Generator

03/11/2010 4:26 PM

I have installed a micro hydro turbine(1KW) with Induction Generator (a motor rated 2.2KW,240V-Delta,930 rpm) it's generating 210 V,45Hz at 560watt load. Presently I have connected this power to separate Lighting load (560 Watt) What happen if I synchronize this power with State Electricity Supply 230 V,50Hz?? I can not guess anything about it. Pl. clear if anyone have clear idea about the result. Thanks

I am not an EE but I will submit a guess-

Your generator will fry and the state system will run everything.

Your voltage is too low, you are out of frequency synch and your current "load" is likely not performing at its rated output because of both factors but especially the low voltage. Rated wattage is TOTALLY dependent on voltage- a 230 VAC lighting system running at 210 VAC will produce (210/230)^2 power. IF it were not a resistance load, running at reduced frequency would derate a motor as well, just like a VFD.

Hi,

I am guessing that unloaded this runs at > 50Hz.

Do you have 3Ph mains power available? If so you will need to rewire your generator to star to approximate the voltage of the mains. The generator should then put the power back into the main grid. It should auto synchronise by its nature.

To make this experiment safe I suggest you connect a load in each leg between the generator and the mains. For example 3kW heater elements or high power halogen flood lights. Then if all goes to plan the generator will sync (these loads behave like a long wire connection rather than loads) and you will see a higher voltage at the generator than on the mains, indicating that the generator is giving you power to the grid. If not then the grid will power the generator and it will return to its motor function.

Dear Dhanesh, Being an induction generator, you can synchronized directly with the greed provided if it is permitted by supply utility.

Without looking into generated frequency????
