03/11/2010 7:56 PM

Hi, sort of got thrown into a project management position in the petroleum industry and am interested in figuring out if API allows 2" socket welds of line pipe and if so, where is this stated. I've gone through API Spec 5L and cant find it for the life of me. Anyone help me out?

You need to look at ASME B31.3 for piping design.

API 5L is a piping material spec.

It is a normal practice to use socket welds upto 1-1/2" size from standard available materials from market. Beyond this size only butt welds are used. In case you want to specifically use socket weld for 2" size the joint should be designed using allowable stress at the working temp., stress concentration factor and specially fabricated.
