Robot-Assisted Surgery Here Today at UNC

07/07/2005 6:40 AM

Call him 'da Vinci!'
The University of North Carolina Hospital has a new surgical assistant "sporting three arms, a computerized brainand a glowing track record in helping to repair heart valves, remove cancerous prostates, (and) bypass blocked coronary arteries," among other procedures.
Will there ever be a day where people will be operated on solely by 'Robot Surgeons'...conveyor belt style?
Or have I seen too many Sci-Fi movies.

I posted an article on this in May. Amazing how fast technology can advance along a given curve.

Eye surgery...

07/08/2005 8:31 AM

I had lasik eye surgery done a few years ago and the eye scans and laser surgery itself were pretty much all computer driven. I know the doctor does something important, but when your lying on the table, the computer is making lots of critical decisions (including detecting tiny eye movements, and not firing if the eye is not in perfect position). I felt like I was in good hands the whole time. (And I totally recommend the procedure and facility: http://www.lasikmd.ca/)
