I just completed a project using the Acuity Lasers to measure wood veneer thickness, ie measured the top and bottem distance and then took the differance to get thickness. We achieved an overall accuracy of +- 0.0005". This required a couple of corection tables and a littel computing.

Yes, the above posts are all right reference, especially John's design, very precision. Most of 3D coordinates set need touch with surface fo the products, so laser measurer is a best bet. But if your pressed body is envelopped in a vessel, you would need a x-ray equipment to get a radiographic pictuer to measure either their high size or their density.
