Flanges for Piping Class 900

03/18/2010 4:51 AM

In piping classes 900#. we are going with 1500# flanges and valves for sizes less than 2".

what is reason for the above and what is the basis for it.

Re: 900# class

As far as I know there are no flanges less than 3" in class 900# as per ASME B16.5

In fact for #400 and #600 interpretation is clear (Interpretn 4-9, page I-4,2003 ed)

Q: In accordance with ASME B16.5-1996 para. 4.14, may flanges NPS ½ through 3½ meeting all of the requirements for Class 600 be marked to show conformance with both Class 400 and Class 600?
A: Yes.

For class 900# it says to use dimensions of 1500#

You may like to have a look at this catalogue

The basis is standardisation when the dimensions do not differ by much as per mechanical calculations (e.g., flange thickness, loading, etc.) then why create one extra variant?

I agree your statement.

Then why we are not calling as 900# in 900 piping class. as you said both 1500# and 900# are same.

Simple

If you call it 900# it becomes invalid for 1500#. Usually a higher class can be down-rated to a lower class. However not vice-versa.

See Table 17 extracted from ASME B16.5-2009:

Mr. Abdel Halim Galala,

Table 17 states use it for only dimensions. Never said it is for replacement.

please clarify.

This aspect is already brought out in my earlier post

For class 900# it says to use dimensions of 1500#.

Here the ASME is not so clear-cut as in the other class. However the meaning/intention is clear.
