Windows XP Fanatics take note

03/19/2010 6:04 PM

A rather surprising article hit the front page of the BBC on Tuesday: the next generation of hard disks could cause slowdowns for XP users. Not normally the kind of thing you'd expect to be placed so prominently, but the warning it gives is a worthy one, if timed a bit oddly. The world of hard disks is set to change, and the impact could be severe.

...sounds like M/S has swayed the HD manufacturers to the "...dark side."

...so, that makes us (me!) a hostage (again) to M/S

I do not see this as any more than an MS marketing ploy. Second market disks of the current generation are going to be around for a long, long time. MS has been unable to wean us off XP through two generations of upgrades by offering an improved product, so now they try to scare us in to changing. Last time they tried this, they scared me right in to the Linux camp...Now I am running multiple Linux distros, some designed for 32 bit machines, some for 64 bit machines, all on the same machine.

A note to MS: It's not the operating system, people. It is the applications. Please stop messing with Excel. You once had it right, now I can't find my way around the GUI...

Hard drive is using 512B sector but XP formated with NTFS use 4096B cluster. So its been reading 4096B of data from the HD already. You can format the drive to use larger cluster size, like 8k and 16k.

Also the motherboard may have problem read the HD before the OS get to it.
