A new way of seeing cathodic protection

03/20/2010 7:08 AM

I became a professional pipeliner in 1966 and a full time cathodic protection specialist in 1973.

By 1975 I had developed DCVG and in the early 1980's applied for a patent for the Alexander Cell.

I was the first to try to apply the principles of the 'immediate off' theory in the field while I was Senior Corrosion Technologist for Shell-BP Development Corporation of Nigeria.

I invented the recording 'Pearson' equipment for use on CIPS surveys during participation in the very first CIPS surveys while working on contract to Atkins Inspection Services for British Gas in the North Thames Gas, Western Region.

With the coming of digital multimeters I was able to confirm my own concepts of how cathodic protection works by carrying out field experiments that prove conclusively that there are components of the present monitoring theory and practice that miss a very important electrical feature when applying cathodic protection.

I demonstrated this to Mike Foskett, who was in charge of the development of OLI4 (the survey that later became known as CIPS) and he asked me to write a paper of my concept for publication to the corrosion control community. I have now scanned my original manuscript and the typed document and they are ready for publication on the internet.

Mike submitted the document to Dr Vic Ashworth for technical editing who rejected it out of hand as it was not written in the same language as would have been by someone who had a University Degree.

We need to consider the potential of the electrolyte as a major feature in stopping the corrosion reaction. We are impressing charges, as in a battery charger, and the electrical equilibrium of the whole system must be accurately measured. Present practices do not render accurate data for computer analysis.

for the manuscript and original document follow the links on

it would be good if others can add to this work to produce a modern version including data and information from their own experiences. This would provide the industry with a much needed guide.
