voltage and amperes question? (solar power)

03/20/2010 12:02 PM

g'day electricians! just a quick one, i have a 6v wet cell battery wich i charge with a 7.5v solar pannel, would any additional solar pannels in parralel need to be 7v also? or can i have like 1v 500ma pannels in addition to the original to increase charge rate.

also do differently powered s. pannels in circuit (or parralel, for that matter,) lose energy from lower powered pannels leeching power? or is that protected by the same princable as charging a car battery with a solar pannel.

In general:

1) If the sources are not the same voltage then you can not combine them in parallel.

2) If the sources are the same voltage then you need to know their characteristics to be confident that you can combine them in parallel. Until you actually learn and understand their characteristics then the "same nominal voltages in parallel" answer is "maybe".

Also:

1) Well constructed sentences tend to get better responses than sloppy sentences.

2) Over the years we have had a lot of bad experiences with people named "Guest". If you don't have time to register then people might not have time to respond.

Good post. Well put.

If the OP does not understand that, he may also not understand that with his present system, he could still be over charging his battery and reducing its life span significantly.....

There is a concept called impedance... So if the the characteristics of those panels are different then I can propose you not to use them in serial for it may get the things worse than before. Secondly for the parallel case since both voltage and the impedances would be most probably different, it may cause negative results or at least not an improvement as such as expected.

So keep it simple and keep it as it is, Mr Guest...
