Exhaust Temperatures - CAT 3516B/3512B Gen Sets

03/20/2010 10:55 PM

Hello, I manage a power facility with 2 Caterpillar 3516B and one 3512B generator sets. The 3516B's are connected to 2000kva/400v/50hz/.8pf generators, and the 3512B to a 1250kva/400v/50hz/.8pf generator. these units are run in the island mode as prime power. the maximum load is 1600kw @ unity pf. The elevation is <200ft above sea level, and the ambient temp average is 83F(max 95F). The service manuals say NTE 950F exhaust temp @ full load (1600 kw). these units never run over 1250 kw because of the load demand priority settings (i.e. @ 1250 kw load a second unit is started and comes on line). The problem is the exhaust temperatures: @ 1200 kw the exhaust temps are 1199F/1210F. I have tried to get the dealer to respond but no luck, are these temps dangerous for our engines? They are brand new: the 3516's have 1235 hrs and the 3512 234 hrs run time. Maximum fuel consumption is 65/67 usgph at 1250 kw. Thanks.

Re: Exhaust temperatures CAT 3516B/3512B gensets

The plant I worked in two years ago had a 1200-rpm Cat 3516 on an 1100-kW (1375 kVA) 60-Hz genset. It sounds as though your gensets are underpowered, perhaps even "lugging" to keep up, and hence overheating the exhaust.

Thanks for your post. You may be right because these are 60 hz machines detuned for 50 hz (1500 rpm's). However, since we operate isolated (island mode) we have to assume whatever load is out there and maintain voltage and frequency. Also we operate in the prime mode of operation (24/7). What were the exhaust temps with your 3516? Thanks again!

I'd agree with the assesment of overloading; I have found CAT diesels to be fairly responsive in the load - diesel consumption. Check your recorded fuel consumption against the CAT charts for the 3516B on their site for reference.

Since you have to maintain speed (on our island [Curacao, Dutch Caribbean] we also maintain 50 Hz) it appears you have little option but to split the load permanently or at least start the second unit at a threshold of about 1100 kW.

In any case; you 650 oC is way too hot; that hotter than our gasturbine exhaust!

I uses to start to panic when the exhaust temperature on my 3408 would climb above 1050F. I knew it was time to back off and get things under 950F.

Hi! You are right! You have 2 problems.may be more... 1 - - This is a too high exhaust temp ! this heat may be recovered into power. 2 - - Your power quality is poor . Hi

I was operating a power plant somewhere in Iraq in a military base, it is 21 gensets 3516B in Island mode, we were running always at 1150-1270F for an average load of 1200KW, depending of ambient temp. and the fuel we use, when we use DF2 exhaust temperature go down 50-60 deg lower than when we use JP8 in the same hot day.

What fuel grade you are using?

1200F exhaust is high but not dangerous, ECM is programmed to shut the engine down when exhaust temperature become dangerous, the set point is fairly far than 1210F.

your fuel consumption is very good, we were consuming 71 gph for each MW. 20% higher than yours.

On some units we installed a scrubber cooler for the inlet air into turbo and for the fuel pipes, the results was very good, we got exhaust temperature to go lower of about 50F in hot days whens anbiemt exceed 115F

Being 60Hz units converted to 50hz could be the reason of your overheat if a wrong flash file was downloaded to ECM, can you check witch version of flash file you have in your ECM? it needs ET software to check, do you have it?

I hope my reply was helpful to you

Regards

Dear Friend,

This temp. is high.

How dangerous it is to be confirmed thru Manf,OEM or dealer too.?

Higher temp will increase your sevicing frequency of turbo-charger.

All the Best.

my friend you have the answer in your question itself the root cause is your load is 1600kW Unity power factor and your sets are designed to operate with 0.8 PF that means you are loading 100% of the rated load and you have not mentioned your sets are prime duty or continues duty if its prime duty sets naturally they get over heated that means your power plant is undersized! thats the reason your dealer is not responding don't except help from any body you have to live with the overheating problem

Just a comment based on experience;

It is not uncommon to find elevated exhaust temperatures for CATs when the exhaust piping is undersized (or even right at the mfg's specs) or the routing is complicated, both of which can cause excessive back pressure...
