By "slip" bearing I assume that you mean "sleeve" or "journal" bearing. In my early days the rule of thumb was a thou per inch of the shaft diameter with a minimum of 4 thou. (1 thou = 0.001") Above about 6" this reduces otherwise clearances can get too big.

Having said that, there is no substitute for the equipment manufacturer's clearances, as he knows the specific bearing loads, speeds, lubricating oil type and quantities etc of his equipment

you can check this on a more complete bearing catalogueof your bearing

Gives pretty much the same answer as #1 except that it goes down below 0.004. My copy is over 40 years old, so things may have changed a bit.

More information please:

Bearing type and material, diameter and width of journal, lubrication type and method, application...

hi, the dimension of hole and shaft are based on your work together. you need check tables of tolerance dimensions based on ANSI norm.

in the SKF web you can find this tolerances for the hole, this are based on the dimension of your bearing.

first find the bearing to you use (if are not SKF only found the same dimension and type), and found the dimension sheet of the bearing and thats have a data about the tolerance of the hole for montage and the shaft.

You are talking about the wrong type of bearing I think.

A crankshaft bearing on automobile gasoline engine is usually .0015" to .002" for the main bearings, and .0025" t0 .003" for connecting rods. The crankshaft journal diameter is usually 1.75: to 2.00".

Maybe this will help as an example.
