Mangosteen Pulp Concoction

03/23/2010 1:43 PM

mangosteen is popular in the philippines nowadays because its in season again. we try not to put to waste the pulp which we clean using tap water; after which we cut into thin slices and with about a cup of the sliced pulps, we put in about one liter water that has boiled and cooled down a minute ago. we then drink this concoction like the way one would take tea. now, are there some reliable lab results or data that show medical remedies of mangosteen pulp concoction? thanks!

Well, I found a little bit at Wikipedia, my bestest friend:

"Furthermore, a possible adverse effect may occur from chronic consumption of mangosteen juice containing xanthones. A 2008 medical case report described a patient with severe acidosis possibly attributable to a year of daily use (to lose weight, dose not described) of mangosteen juice infused with tannins."

As with many things, it sounds like excess consumption can have an undesireable effect.

The Wiki article link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purple_Mangostee

A description similar to yours about how the juice is made can be found there.

Hmmnmmmmm...

Tried the link this morning, and it doesn't work. Try this one:

Must have mis-copied the link. Just tried this one, and it is O.K.

The lab results so far identified xanthones in mangosteen having a number of useful medicinal applications: anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and antimicrobial against multi-drug-resistant bacteria.

This is a review article: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18725264

Or search "mangosteen" here and see the abstracts of 114 peer reviewed studies.

The published paper about the acidosis is there as well - please note, this is a single case study (one patient) and there was no proof of causality. But of course, I agree with Doorman that moderation is a good thing.
