Purpose of Earth Lug in Piping

Guys,

Anybody knows the importance of installing earth lug in piping. In my current project, earth lug in ammonia lines was remove for some reason. Please help...Thanks..

Ask the individual that directed the lug to be removed to confirm the reason for doing so.

The earthing lug is mainly connected to peform 2 major and safety critical issues:

1- For underground piping it is used to connect portions of the piping to the remote cathoidc protection system ( avrage pipe voltage -750 to -1000 mV to ground for Carbon Steel)

2- While for the above ground piping it is used to discharge any electric static charge caused by liquid/gas movement inside the pipe.
