02/06/2007 8:26 AM

Has anyone heard about the battery charger saver ion-x ? these chargers are used with lead acid, agm and gel deep cycle batteries. features are no loss of elect. , no gasing, and no sulfate build up on plates. made by www.hdmsys.com, looks like a fine product for marine elct. system.

This looks similar to another product "Battery Minder" which I have been using for several months on my boat batteries. They apparently have a patented process which charges your battery with 3.5 MHz pulses. These pulses supposedly break up sulfidation on the batteries plates and prolong their life. They are available online (the e place) for ablut $40.00 including shipping for the 1.3 Amp version.

I have been using one of the 1.3 Amp units on my boat batteries for about 2 months, and they have saved one of my deep cycle batteries for me. Before putting on the Battery Minder, it was only able to charge up to about 25% as measured on the hydrometer. After 2 months on the charger it now registers well over 75% charge. In use I am now able to start the engine with no problem where before it would only grunt.

It takes a long time to restore dead batteries, but what else are you going to do with them for the next two months?

I have a similar unit that has a de-sulfidation mode, and also charges up to 12 Amps and am very happy with it except for one detail: I have had some functional batteries but that were deeply discharged and the charger "refused" to charge them, issuing a fault instead. Once charged with a conventional charger, I could again use the computerized one for both charging and/or de-sulfidation. It would have been nice if my new charger had an override to perform conventional DC charging when necessary, because without my old charger, I would have been out of luck.

Yes, it is usually a good idea to keep the older, less complicated tools available for those times when the newer, more sophisticated ones are not up to the task.

I keep my 30 year old 10 Amp charger handy, and have found that it is useful to charge up dead batteries before the desulfidication charger will consent to do its thing.
