Different Pressure Rating Due to Its Phase

03/24/2010 11:19 PM

I am confusing by looking at a drawing. It is a Separator and although the pressure in the separator will be the same for both top and bottom outlets, the piping specs. are different for Top Line (vapor phase) and Bottom Line (liquid phase) which is lower in pressure rating. Could somebody enlighten me?

Corrosion?

Is the liquid material a higher alloy?

That sounds odd. The pressure at the lower connection will actually be higher by (height of liquid x density of liquid x factor), and if anything the liquid would be likely require a greater corrosion allowance, if any. Maybe it's just a typo on the drawing?

If you can contact the drafter, he/she might be able to explain.

Sorry guys, it's my carelessness. That bottom line is connected to a flash drum working at ATM. Sorry to bother you all.

Even IF the lower line is connected to an ATM flash tank, it still sees the same initial pressure as the upper line UNLESS there is a restriction valve or orifice at the higher pressure tank connection to the lower line. If that is the case, the lower pressure rating could make sense.

Dear Energygod,

You are absolutely right. There is a FCV in front of the flash tank.

Thanks for your care.
