2001 Chevy Venture - Fuel Gauge Problems

03/25/2010 9:47 AM

Fuel Gauge in 2001 Chevy Venture mini van, gauge keeps moving from full to empty and in between even though we know that the tank is full, what would cause the gauge need to move on its own for no reason Keith

A loose wire on the level transmitter circuit could be the reason.

Fuel gage likely completes circuit thru the ground. For this reason one of the first things to check is the wiring and for proper grounding of the sending unit.

This is a chronic GM issue with all their vehicles from 2000-2004. The fix is inside the fuel tank and is expensive to fix. I had a 2000 GM 1/2ton, 2001 chevy pickup, 2002 gm van, 2002 chevy van, and a 2002 Montana and all had failed gas gauges (part of a business fleet). Dealership denies GM fault but I know better. Our other vehicles never had this problem. Eventually your gauge will fail and you must depend on your odometer for refueling times and you must fill-up complete each time. Cost to fix was estimated at $900.00/vehicle. Its a sensor in the tank and fuel pump need replacing to fix according to dealers. Not worth it unless it can be fixed by GM for free... LOL.

Kevin,

I gave you a GA because that has been my experience. With regard to the dealership, I cannot understand a dealer that will not act as a customer's advocate. The selling dealer was always trying to get the better of me. Then I took it to another dealer and they did act as my advocate to the tune of a $2000.00 refund on rear differential rebuild. Anyone who wants to know the dealers involved PM me.

vehicle is 2001 GMC 2500HD

The sending unit is part of the fuel pump module and it is inside the fuel tank. The modules sell for $200 to $400 depending upon the year and model, also your ability to buy retail or wholesale. The tank must be removed and the module replaced from the top of the tank. Be sure you use a new "O" ring or you will get a check engine light caused by a vacuum leak at the "O" ring. Typically it takes a good tech an hour or so to replace, but that is an experienced man with a proper shop and equipment!

Sounds like a ground problem.

I believe we hit just about all the possibilities here. Unless they changed the construction , there is a resistive winding and wiper as part of the sending unit. When the wiper loses contact with the winding you lose the signal to the gauge in the vehicle. Usually progress makes things more durable, but, here the manufacturer seemed to fall short. Your only option could be to replace the entire sending unit and it is expensive. This is progress?

I have a 2001 silverado with the same problem. As pointed out by all the responses it may be to exspensive to fix. Just keep her filled up I guess.

I searched a data base for recalls and service bulletins.

Although your particular problem is not listed in recalls, it is noted that the 2001 Venture has the most recalls of any model year.

Check these links:

Re: 2001 Chevy Venture - Fuel Gauge Problems

Ahhh, Chevy fuel pump problems! I had the same issues with a Venture and with two Suburbans, and there's two very likely causes. The first is the sending unit disfunction, which is explained admirably here. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/2002_venture_fuel_gauge_jumps_all_over_the_place_regardless_of_how_much_fuel_is_in_it_it_will_jump_from_empty_to_full_never_know_how_much_fuel_you_have_any_help_thanks_csmechaniccomcastnet

The second problem is the ground for the fuel pump, and the easiest way to correct it is to simply install a new grounding strap and not bother searching out the bad ground connection.

Finally, if you are planning on keeping the rig forever, when you have the tank dropped cut an access hole in the floor of the vehicle above the fuel pump on the tank, fabricate a cover for it and then put it all together so in the future, all you need to do is open the access cover(like Land Rovers do...or did)and pull the pump without dropping the tank, etc. Much safer, easier and you save a lot of beer.

I have seen this problem myself. the oem fuel level sensor is quite expensive, but found an aftermarket on ebay, much cheaper and it works fine.

hello i am 58flh, if your gas giiiiuage moves while your driving thats normal! that is just the fuel sloshing around in the tank, (stop&go). But if you have a full tank & the car is standing still, then the problem lies in the fueltank pick-up. this tells the gage how much gas is in the tank! To fix this problem the fueltank must be dropped, emptied, & dried as best you can. there are 4 to5 bolts on top of the tank, depends on the model. take the bolts out pull-out the sending unit go buy a new!!! one also make sure they give you the gasket, put everything back in reverse order that you took apart. problem solved! I ALSO FORGOT TO MENTION when you drop the tank,& unplug the wires from the sendingunit MAKE SURE the proper ohms,& voltage is reading at the clip! good-luck 58flh
