Piston & Rider Ring: Horizontal Reciprocating Compressor

03/26/2010 6:49 AM

Need some information on:

1) Piston Ring & Rider Ring: Purpose in non-lubricated cylinder of compressor.

2) How to decide the no of these rings on piston & its location.

3) What if a single ring is used instead of these multiple rings.

  1. Piston ring to prevent gas leaking past piston. Rider ring to separate piston from cylinder liner.
  2. Depends - double acting, single acting, pressure ratio, materials etc etc
  3. More leakage.
