Green House Woes

03/26/2010 9:39 AM

I am building an 8 x 12 greenhouse. In order to maintain a temp below 90, I have installed the following:

-replaced wax roof vent openers with damper actuators (spring return) 24v

- installed a 1/4 hp shutter fan on the end exterior wall

- wired the fan to a relay thus to the stat

- picked up a honeywell Pro th6000 2 stage cooling stat, my thought was to wire the actuators into the 1 stage (set at 70 deg and no problem works fine) and have wired my fan into the 2nd stage cooling and ran the test program and it works fine also.

The problem or question is how do I set the limits on when I want the dampers to open ( which seems ok as the cool temp is set at 70 deg and the dampers open at 70 ) and then I was hoping they would close at 80 deg when the 2nd stage kicks in but I cannot figure out how to set the 2nd stage and when I run the test it appears the 1st stage stays on when the testing the 2nd stage??

I do not want to short circuit the air flow as the fan will draw more air from the roof vents then from the wall vent at the other end of the house located near the floor to create a good draw??

Help me if you can as I think I have out smarted myself this time.......

you can use a relay that is controlled by the second stage stat. Hook the 1st stage that you have running to the damper now through a set of normally closed contacts on the relay. Hook the fan to a set of normally open contacts. When the 2nd stage kicks in, it will activate the relay which will close the damper and start the fan. I hope this helps. If you have any further questions my email is BRM8250@gmail.com.

Thanks,

Ben

Hey Ben and Energygod tx for the info

I did install a relay and it works great, next problem was I was using a two stage cooling stat and never realized that the window was too short, only a few degrees before 2nd stage kicks in, so I went to two stats, one set at 65 opens the roof vents and 2nd stat set at 80 turns on fan. When fan kicks on the relay closes the roof vents. Just awsome, had so much fun with that, I installed another relay, and a shutter vent at the other end of the green house and connected it to an actuator motor and wired it into the 1st stat so when the roof vents open, it opens the shutter vent and by passes the first relay so when the fan kicks on and closes the roof vents the shutter vent stays open to supply outside air to the fan. When the fan meets its demand, it shuts off opening the roof vents again and when it goes below 65 it closes everything.

Bam works great, now I have to just wire in my solinoids and timer for the watering and I do not have to even go into the green house except to harvest. haha

tx again

Gregg

Looks like someone has truly found their "Green Acres".

Enjoy the growing season and the results.

You can also change the fan discharge so you are pushing air into the greenhouse- install a baffle twice the area of the fan at 1 fan diameter downstream- to eliminate any possibility of short circuit.
