What Size Setscrew?

04/02/2010 12:59 AM

I am using a 1410 series companion flange of 1.25" bore diameter and 0.25" key width. I was wondering what size setscrew should i use? 0.25" or 0.375"? it would be helpful if someone could give me some references to this and how how the set screw size affects the entire flange? ( i believe the set screw is there to tighten the shaft to the bore).

-4-5 mm set screw would be enough its function is to keep all parts together

Sort of. The set screw is to keep the whole thing from coming apart. It holds the key down tight in it's slot so it doesn't start worrying the metal. It keeps the shaft from working out of the flange. The shaft must be a good fit in the flange, usually is.

I would use a 1/4" set screw, a larger one won't hold any more, really, and the larger hole just weakens the flange.

Some flanges will have two set screws, one for the key, and another so you can dimple the shaft to prevent the shaft from moving out.

Dimpling a shaft is done for lots of things, to keep a shaft in a coupling or whatever. The way I do it is to run the setscrew down to make a mark on the shaft. then I remove the coupling and use a drill the size of the setscrew or larger and drill a short hole (dimple) in the shaft. Reassemble the coupling, and make sure the setscrew finds the dimple. There is no way the coupling can slip off. This is common practice on boat propeller shafts, when the boat is in reverse, the propeller is pulling on the shaft.

As I recall, standard keyways are 1/4 of shaft diameter, rounded to a near fraction. Setscrews would be about the same diameter as the width of the key. I'm not sure there is an absolute rule on this, but it may serve as a rough guide.
