DVD to Data Disc Conversion

04/02/2010 6:41 PM

Hi to all

I would like to back up my computer using DVD discs.

Is there an easy way to convert DVD disc to data disc before starting the back up process ?

Thanks for help

Really?!?!?!? Back-up on DVD discs?!?!?!

Why not an external USB hardrive?

Or even a solidstate hardrive/USB "stick" - can be a little expensive but many times more effective.

A quick search brought-up:

http://reviews.cnet.com/external-hard-drives/transcend-ssd18m-solid-state/4505-3190_7-33626975.html

The review is many months old, and prices may have dropped already because it is an "emerging" product. There are many more options.

There's no need to 'convert' a DVD disc to a data disc. Depending on which OS you're using the software may already be built in. DVD backups are only practical when the amount of data is small, e.g. less than 50GB. Larger than that and you might want to consider an external hard drive. Many external hard drives come with backup software (Acronis for example)

You neglected to mention how much data needs to be backed up, that is vital info.

Also, what type of data is it. Picture data generally does not compress, in fact it gets bigger if you try and compress it.....

As with all jobs, you need to know what you are doing, before starting.

As already mentioned, DVDs do not need to be "converted" (unless you are using rewritable, which may need to be erased first if data is already on them), even a film is only data in a special format.....nothing more, nothing less....

For large amounts of data, a professional 1/2" Cassette/Cartridge machine is best and cheaper if bought secondhand, though be careful when buying secondhand tapes, they are often so damaged as to be unuseable......but if in a good state are almost infinitely reusable and have a long storage life (longer than DVD and CD and I expect bluRay too...), most tapes are 30 years or more.....secondhand drives with 100GB capacity (uncompressed) are available cheap on ebay....under $300 if you are lucky.....

BluRay is relatively slow for large amounts of data and no rewitables as of now as far as I am aware (though I am not upto date on that technology as I have Tape drives!!)
