Injecting H2 Into Diesel to Increase Fuel Mileage

04/02/2010 10:46 PM

At a truck show last week, a vendor described an electrolysis package that splits distilled H20 into H2 and oxygen. The H2 is injected into the diesel immediately upstream of the fuel pump, and the vendor claims a 10 - 15% increase in fuel efficiency. The device and installation costs less than 3,000. With semi-trucks getting less than 6 mpg, such a device would pay for itself quickly ... if it works. Thoughts ? Thanks, George Davenport

Hello George. This topic and the associated devices (both commercial and otherwise) have been covered in numerous previous threads on CR4. The general consensus is either scam or pseudoscience device (short answer is it doesn't work and don't waste your money, ESPECIALLY if onboard water electrolysis is involved).

Have a look at the numerous threads on CR4 on the subject and make your own mind up if you wish (I personally don't really want to get into it yet again).

Listen to jack of all trades. Google HHO and see.

Buy a new set of tires and fill them with Nitrogen. You'll be better off.

And even pumping tyres with nitrogen is also a waste of money! Rather pump new tires say 30% higher and as the oxygen leaks out through the rubber, you will be left with allmost only nitrgen in the tyres! [The same with your old Citroens suspension spheres]

The OP was contemplating spending $3,000.00USD on a useless accessory. Let him buy some N2. He'll still have $2,000.00 left over.

You would think that adding a gas before a diesel injector pump would cavitate the pump. Maybe they inject it into the airstream. Hydrogen burns hotter than gas, don't know how that would affect a diesel.

Just read a good article on adding water to engines, it really only works on supercharged engines. It cools the air that the supercharger heats up, has to be introduced in the right place at the right settings. It was used for War Emergency Power in WW2 airplanes.

" It was used for War Emergency Power in WW2 airplanes."

Also used on commercial jets for added power during takeoff in the "60's and "70's.

Hello Lyn

Surprised this post hasn't neen shut down by now. I'm sure we're all getting tired of reading about these scams .

But on the subject of water injection - this gave a power boost by cooling the charge, hence higher density and greater mass of fuel into the engine (as I'm sure you know). I don't think it was ever claimed to improve efficiency.

Cheers........Codey

It was used to control detonation due to supercharging. The supercharging heated up the air, the water cooled it down. I presume with water, they were able to increase boost more, thus getting more power. I don't know if they got more efficiency, they probably had to add more fuel to get more power.

I wonder if the Indy cars ever use water. Thought I read where they add boost, somehow they must be able to control it.

Boost! BOOST!BOOST! We ran competition diesels in Offshore boats at 65lb manifold boost. Cascaded triple turbos and BIG coolers. 20 years ago. Some of them are still running, mostly in Norway, I hear. OWZAT!?? Cheers, Stu.

they dont put it into the diesel.

its put into the air intake

If you inject explosive hydrogen into airflow of diesel it will ignite early when air becomes heated during compression.

thus reducing power.

also you would not be able to produce enough for it to work, you would have to carry a cylinder of the gas around.

water injection does work.

I correct myself flash point of hydrogen is quite high

http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/fuels-ignition-temperatures-d_171.html

but it still wouldnt be viable
