Odd Electrical/Other Car Problems

04/02/2010 10:16 PM

I'm not sure but i think this is a unique problem that will be very hard to find. I have a 1998 ram 2500 12 v.diesel, last year it started shifting erratically, and at the same time that would happen the low fuel light would come on, the fuel gauge would bury to zero, the trans.temp light would come on, the tac.would jump all around. My scanner showed trans.solenoids bad, so i had them replaced. All was well until about two months ago, it started all over again. I could not understand what the trans.problem had to do with the gauge problem, except maybe a bad ground at the computer. So i checked the plug connectors, 1 pin was a little black, i was told that was to the alt. So at my wits end, i brought to a mechanic, who then replaced both solenoids again, and also the connector to the comp. Worse then when i brought it there. I just replaced the comp.with a used one, and now it does the same thing, with an added problem. Abs and brake light on. One strange thing, it also happens on sharp left turns

can be a bad ground, but not necessary @ your board computer. Also check the alternator spark suppression.

Thanks, what do you mean by alt.spark suppression?,and also i dont have an electrical schematic to see if they all have a common ground,so i have to look for them vissualy.

A Capacitor is most frequently used. (it is for the radio noise and to protect your circuits if the alternator is getting to its lifetime- end)

- Capacitor/ sometimes a specific semiconductor.

1998, time to clean all your grounds (and contacts) with sandpaper.

Screw tight and put some vaseline on top.

Are your battery terminals clean enough?

Ah the clue i think is sharp left turns

check the earth strap to the engine, it may be a tight fit that parts when cornering

try running thick cable from negative side of battery to a bolt on the engine ( any bolt that can be removed so an eyelet can be placed onto it and run cable loosely to battery.

I came across similar problem on a Peugeot and the earth strap to the engine had broke

Ground/cable loom problem.

It could also be a battery that is somehow internally damaged (manufacturing defect probably) that changes its voltage when cornering/braking/accelerating......but very very seldom seen in my experience.

Do try the other fixes before swapping the battery with a known good one, just temporarily for a test.....

Best of luck.

I believe Peterg is on to something. Something that shouldn't be too difficult to do is have someone turn the steering wheel all the way to the left while you observe just what is moving under the hood and under the vehicle. This might provide some insight as to where your problem is originating. Another clue could be , what was disturbed when the solenoids were replaced the first time? We're always shooting in the dark with problems like these, but who can refuse the challange to find it? You might look for something that is rubbing on a wire or harness at the time the full left turn is in progress. Would like to follow up on this if you keep us informed. May come up with addl suggestions if you would like. Thanks

Had a similar problem years ago with a customers car and it turned out to be one of the through firewall connectors. When you would make a turn or hit a bump the connector would flex causing the problem...

Sounds like its time for the ole "wiggle" test.

Start the engine , have someone sit in the drivers seat and observe the offending lamps and gauges . Start wiggling every wire , wire harness and connector under the hood . When you wiggle the problem area the lamps etc. will react and your observer will see it. Give a good tug to any inline fuses and single wire connectors as they tend to corrode . If nothing is found , jack it up and do same with all wiring underneath . Double check for anything shorting in a left turn.

It sounds to me like you have an abbrasion short to ground in the wiring harnesses running underneath the vehicle from the engine compartment to the trans. and fuel tank.

Please let us know how you make out .
