Good morning people:
I have a problem that I need help with, I have an 89 Ford F150 pick up truck, and if you're not familiar with this let me help.
Ford installed the same steering column in their pickups for a long time, the 89's had the old style that basically is a tube that contains all of the components including the ignition switch (bolted to the outside) and the lock cylinder which is in the right side of the column and there in lies the problem.
My steering column has worn out and was UN repairable, (at least by my standards) so I went to a junk yard and purchased another of the same type, upon purchasing this I was obligated to give my old one as a core which I did. I went out in the yard and located another and pulled it, (not an easy feat as I had to do this while sitting in the passenger seat as the drivers door was up against another vehicle) well I got it out and purchased it for $75.00 but there was one problem and that is that there was no ignition key.
Now the problem to remove a ford lock cylinder you must locate a small hole near the cylinder and insert a stiff wire or something like that and while turning the key half a turn the cylinder will come out however since I don't have a key I am stuck. I have contacted several locksmiths and they were no help, one guy said he "MIGHT" be able to pick it and another said that he could file a key to fit but that will take hours and either method may cost more than the steering column. Since many of the people that subscribe to this site are brilliant beyond measure I was wondering if you had any other ideas, I was thinking about drilling it but the locksmiths were at odds about the outcome one said that it will jam the thing for good and another said that the "world would end if I did that" any how sans ending the world what can I do, I don't care if I destroy the lock cylinder as I can get a new one but I don't want to ruin the unit.
Thank you Michael.
