Where to Get an Article Published

04/09/2010 10:58 AM

Hi all

I have written an article with many photos, drawings and diagrams on a welding press I made for straight line welding of plastic sheets. It will produce a weld up to 1 metre long and is powered from a cheap welder.

It was written for a British hobby magazine, but it hasn't been published yet and I would like to submit it another magazine. Could someone suggest who may be interested and how to approach them.

Thanks Tony

One quick thing: I'm sure there are CR4-ers who have more experience in such matters but it's generally considered bad form to submit an article to multiple magazines at one time. It's not fair to waste editors' precious time, nor is it fair to other writers. You should submit to only one at a time and wait for acceptance or rejection.

If you've waited slightly longer than the magazine's stated response time (and you should know this & all their submission rules before you submit!) then it's customary to send a polite, very short inquiry letter just asking the status of your submission. If they don't respond to it within a reasonble time -- say a couple of weeks -- then you've got a leg to stand on when it comes to submitting elsewhere.

Even if you don't plan to have a career in writing such articles, that's no excuse not to behave as a professional would.

I have been waiting 5 months, have made 2 resubmissions because they said they were having email troubles and despite 4 emails enquiring if they were going to publish received only acknowledgement they received my email, but no definitive reply.

Bad form to submit to more than one magazine at a time?

This is a competitive world my friend, we can't be doing with hanging around waiting in the vain hope for a response while these people twiddle their thumbs and quaff their cafe lattes in swish coffee emporiums while ruminating on the rudeness of plebs who have the temerity to submit an article to more than one magazine at a time.

So the heat of competition hasn't reached your neck of the woods yet then?

Well, don't worry, have another latte and put on your rose tinted goggles while the rest of us do some business.

I'm terribly sorry that the standards by which the publishing industry generally functions don't meet with your energetic lifestyle approach.

However magazines and other published media are in fact dominated by the oft-overworked (and occasionally borderline psycho - sorry) editors who helm them. For those seeking a writing career almost nothing is more detrimental than ticking off said editors. Nothing frustrates them like digging through piles of submissions and upon finding something worthy learning the author has already sold it elsewhere. Odds are that future submissions to that editor will get filed in the dustbin.

Of course this isn't a universal rule. Many editors don't care one bit. And for one-off writers, it doesn't really matter. But for career writers looking to establish themselves, it really pays in the long run to keep in as many editors' good graces as possible.

Now do please excuse me while I go inquire with my optomitrist about those rose-colored glasses.

Tony, my experience is that magazine editors are desperate for articles. I do a lot of posting on a variety of discipline specific web sites and frequently get invitations to submit articles for publication.

If you are not getting a response it may be that you are casting your hook in the wrong pond.

There also may be some interest in your method in the extrusion or injection molding industry as a post processing method.

It is good to follow submission protocol, but that doesn't answer the question about potential publishers. If your article is on the scholarly side and would appeal to folks in industry, you might approach the Welding Journal. It is published monthly by the American Welding Society (www.aws.org.). If the article is do-it-yourself oriented, I suggest The Home Shop Machinist. The editor, Neil Knopf can be reached at nknopf@villiagepress.com

How about "Everyday Practical Electronics"?

http://www.epemag3.com/index.php

They like unusual products, especially useful ones......

They publish all around the world.....in English only.
