A measurement of the to earth impedance will show you a ohms value.

This should be lower in value than the value of the "body" to protect.

Lightning strikes are locally and do appear on spots that make the current flow easy to the earth.

The highest and most conductive lightning catchers have the highest probability to trap the lightning to the ground.

If you want to protect a steel construction, go high, or put multiple catch poles on different spots and elevated heights.

TEST: wait for a strike.

The earthing system will have been designed and tested in accordance with British Standard 7671 (yet again) so as to provide adequate personal protection by disconnecting the circuit protective device in the event of a fault developing downstream of it.

The lightning arrestor will be seen working when lightning strikes it.
