You should have a look at CAELinux before thinking of porting ANSYS to Linux. CAELinux comes built on the Ubuntu operating system (earlier versions were built on a different Linux distro- the newer distro requires a 64 bit machine). You can actually test drive the various parts of the package either by running from a LiveCD (very, very slow- not recommended for a detailed FEA or CFD analysis), or set up a dual boot to test it without losing your current ANSYS install.

The best part of it all is the price...which is essentially the cost of downloading it from the Internet (which varies, depending on the bandwidth of your Internet connection, and what you are paying for the connection). Very, very sophisticated package with state-of-the-art capabilities. Developed in Europe, however, so sometimes the documentation (some of which was originally written in French) can be a little obscure...Comes with additional packages like SciLab (a freeware substitute for MatLab), many others.

Hi cwarner7_11,

Thank you for this informations, is very useful, but unfortunately Iḿ using ANSYS from couple years at my work. Because I have some discussion with my superior referring to expand ANSYS from windows 32biti to Linux 64biti (with licenses and HPC license) , I want to be sure if can appear some problem on install. So, I have at my home downloaded ANSYS 11 for Linux 64biti (from other source not from custom), but I encountered some problem when I want to install it on CentOS5.4 64biti.

This is the reason because I write this thread here.

Thank you very much for your advice, and I´m sure is very useful for other people who read this thread.

I waiting some suggestion or questions from you about my problem (I cannot begin installation of software on CentOS, but in Ubuntu works done. Why ?)

Best regards

I am not familiar with CentOS version of Linux- I have been working with Ubuntu for quite some time. There are most likely some dependencies that are not being satisfied- libraries and other programs called by ANSYS that have to be available for the program to work. Somewhere in the ANSYS documentation should be a list of dependencies that must be satisfied before ANSYS will work in Linux. These may or may not be available in CentOS.

Hi cwarner7_11,

I´m not familiar too with CentOS, still I have installed ANSYS 11 on Ubuntu 9.10 64biti.

But I want to try to install it on version of linux for which it was created ANSYS, so from help, ANSYS works best on some version of Red Hat. Unfortunate the Red Hat cost money which can be invested for example in supplementary HPC license. So, to do this only option for me is to propose on my firm on which I work with ANSYS with license,to install CentOS on 64biti, and buy an HPC license for our workstation. Before to do this I considerate that useful for me to download ANSYS from internet and test it on my laptop. Principal reason it was not solver on CentOS in test, it was to begin installation and verified if all modules from ANSYS can be launched.

In Ubuntu, Workbench don´t work. To may work must advance knowledge of programmer , which in this moment is not my case.

So, ANSYS theoretical must can be installed only on .rpm platform (Red Hat and Centos) in my case, because the platform of linux supported by ANSYS includes much more linux platform. I choose CentOS, because I am much more familiar with this platform, beside of Ubuntu which is the best platform of linux which is made in this moment. Unfortunately, I repeat, by default installation not all modules can be launched and necessitate advance knowledge in linux to make it work.

I waiting your question, or advice to resolve my problem. If somebody can help to make workbench work good on Ubuntu, I waiting your advice, opinion or ideas.

Best regards.

You could ask the same questions here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/index.php they will most likely have ideas about what ever dependancies of libraries are missing/not satisfied

a higher level of expertise is available here

Fedora is a standard free version of redhat that uses rpm packages to install. That may be a better choice than CentOS.

There are certain softwares that do not cross platforms well, because the are overly dependent on the Windows API. This might be the case with ANSYS- parts won't work in Linux.

Give Fedora a try, see if you can get a full install there.
