Suggestions for Marking PDF File

04/10/2010 2:03 PM

I am researching software to use to markup pdf files. We get pdf files from engineering and need to add balloons to identify the dimensions so that we can reference the dimensions with our suppliers. Example: Dimension T104 (top view, dim id # 104) Adobe Acrobat 9.0 does it but not easily. I would like to use a "stamp" that auto-increments and be able to transfer my mark up onto a newer version of the pdf. Any suggestions?

The Probability Density Function across the whole realm by definition always sums to a value of 1. (Sorry, but I couldn't resist the acronym abuse.)

But 99.72 % will be found within the range of +/- 3 sigma.

Trying to work with pdf's is a

xœí=k¬eWYÌÌ{tæNçUf¦=ç9…³ï^ï½" ¶"òXÚ¡(##…NAgÚ´å• ©'§D#þ€HüA´¤#Eb*J£¼üCÒ h#D!þÐ# ñA0¢BŒß·žßÚ{sï´ÓR

The only workaround I know of for the baloons you want is to save your pdf as a screenshot and then use a graphics program to add the baloons, stamp or whatever, then put the image into a document file and re-export as pdf.

Maybe the more efficient way would be to request that engineering send you the documents in another format.

Hae a look at oxit Reader. It's free. Not too good in Linux, but fine under Windows. Great markup capabilities for text documents, but i don't know about drawings...

We also use BlueBeam. Wonderful for engineers to make mark-ups.

Hi ...

Thanks for the post ... I'm learning a lot just from reading the responses . For me, I use Illustrator, and at least for single page documents, it is the easiest for me to open .pdf's, do what I need to them, and save again as a .pdf. I do it because I work a lot in Illustrator and know my way around it.

BUT, with these other suggestions, some I have never heard of before, I plan to try some others to see what works best for what. I often receive multi-page .pdf's that I must work with, and Illustrator will only open one page at a time.

Kind regards ...

With Adobe Pro you can split the original file that contains multiple pages into multiple files containing only one page. That is the reason I purchased the software. You can also put balloons with comments, red marks, all kinds of stuff, and batch print.

I have tried the converting to MS Word route, however, you lose all of the formatting and with a large selection it is a pain to correct it all.

There is a free program or cheap program called PDF995 that works but the advertising is a pain.

I was working with a LOT of PDF files, so it was worth the time savings to buy the full Adobe Pro version, probably not worth it for a couple of files, then the PDF995 suite is a good option.

I personally like eDrawings for *.dxf and *.dwg, among other CAD graphics standards, but was unaware it worked with *.pdf...I will have to have a look, next time I drop down into the Windows world...

Instead of PDF, if created with proper permissions, can be commented, measures, approved...

Hi,

I use Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional. You can create a custom stamp and have it available under categories you create. It's an easy process and works with minimal effort once you've established a procedure for adding new dims. You create ballons with the dim number inside using a graphics program. In Adobe use the create a custom stamp found under the Tools/Commenting/Stamp selection. Once you get into the custom stamp selections, pick the graphic you created for the T104 dim stamp and insert it over the dimension you choose. Clicking on the stamp will bring up the size handles.....adjust as required.

Now as far as an auto increment so the new version has your previous stamp on it. Because the cad file is a newer version, it may be tough to transfer your previous data onto the new pdf file. It's common for engineering to place notes which aid procedures. Consider having them input your requirements on the drawing. This would fulfill the need of the supplier, as well as ensure the most up to date drawing with your input is available.

Otherwise, give the procedure I mentioned a try and see how it works for you.

Good luck !

Steve

I use Nitro PDF Pro - you can download a 2 week trial version. I find it works well with inserting text and is quite good at conversions (some faffing needed). I haven't tried adding graphics such as balloons.

I use the free pdfXchange viewer for mark-ups, it has built in stamps or you can create custom ones. You can balloon, add text, highlight & many other things and save the result.

For pdf to word conversion pdftoword works well & is free but I think you have to pay if you use it a lot.

This free software works great!!

The possibilities with the paid version are even greater, a real good alternative to Adobe products.

Got my vote Nigh!

You could try the "InDesign", by Adobe.

Autodesk Design Review 2010/2011 was written for this purpose.

Your can edit PDF files directly.

I have Acrobat license. It is great for collating and batch printing.

I was going to suggest that the OP get his engineering folks to output dwf/dwfx files and use design review to mark them up, if his engineering uses Autocad/Inventor. At least with dwf/dwfx (the x means they can be viewed with Internet Explorer under Vista or Win7) the drawings/models retain dimensional intelligence.

BUT, until I saw your posting I was not aware that Design View could open and mark up PDF's. This is great so thanks for pointing that out.

Unfortunately, Design View only "saves" in dwf/dwfx so one would need a PDF printer to be installed to get it back out in PDF. <sigh>
